It took me sometime to figure this out and made me decide to compose an article right away. I looked for solutions online but found no good results etc. so in case people look for a fix hope you get into this page…
Before I tell how to fix this let me tell you that I’ve gone to different web sites RFC’s etc. and found no document about this but I admit I am not perfect and I may have missed some documents please correct me if I did missed anything. According to Microsoft there is a limit on the URL length etc. etc. but that does apply to my issue in addition I am using passive FTP on a Linux box, I just mentioned that to add some words on this post lol.
Since I cannot think of anything else to add let’s get to the point. One of the reasons why you may or are getting “550 Cannot create file” error when uploading via FTP is that the length of the filename might be too long so you need to shorten it at least well I do not know I got confused with the articles I read because all of them are saying different values but the most mentioned is 32 characters. Now I tried that suggestion but darn it still did not work so I kept on trying as it could be an issue on my computer to test I tried a single file but still no go until I noticed there were special characters on the filename I tried removing [brackets] – dashes – and (open/close) parentheses and you know what I still cannot upload the darn file.
Now here’s what’s causing the big deal tadaaaa so it’s you –> : (the double dot) surprising isn’t it? It was pretty small to be notice. What I did was remove that and voila I was happy and promise to keep that within me to avoid such issues again. As Microsoft mentioned the length of the filename does not matter I had a file named: “Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! – What did I do to Deserve this [USA].iso“ and it was uploaded without a single glitch. Now tell me if length matters?
